In a seemingly surprising move, the Patriots released Artrell Hawkins today. Hawkins had been with the team since 2005, when he filled in productively for an injury depleted secondary. Hawkins was injured over a week ago at practice with an undisclosed injury, which may have had an impact on his release.
More importantly, the release of Hawkins could bring on the rise of Brandon Meriweather. Belichick obviously has confidence in Meriweather, because he just got rid of his competition for playing time.
