Patriots Add Depth At Quarterback: Sign Gutierrez to Practice Squad

It’s not Chris Simms, nor Daunte Culpepper.  The Patriots made a move to bolster their quarterback depth by signing Matt Gutierrez to the practice squad.

Gutierrez won’t be on the active roster, but he can always be activated if the Patriots see fit.  There were rumors yesterday that Gutierrez would be returning, but I didn’t want to report them until I knew their accuracy.

Gutierrez is a solid pick-up because he is a quarterback who knows the system, but won’t be a threat to Matt Cassel (in other words, he will no longer put pressure on Cassel for his job).  Goots has NFL size, as well as an NFL arm, as he can put great zip on the ball.  He is also good rolling out of the pocket.  However, he occassionally throws an erratic pass, is not overly mobile, and can sometimes make indecisive reads.

The Patriots also signed punter Tom Malone to the practice squad (they released Reggie Hodges last week).  Malone was competing for the job last year, but then lost out to Danny Baugher, who lost his job as well.  To make room for Baugher, the Patriots released safety Mark Dillard from the practice squad.

  1. Paul says:

“To make room for Baugher, the Patriots released safety Mark Dillard..” You mean ‘to make room for Malone’ don’t you?

  2. I keep hearing that if Cassel begins to struggle Kevin O’Connell will be stepping in. That could be pretty interesting.

  3. I am not surprısıng to anything. But thanks..
