Matt Cassel Traded to Chiefs

Adam Schefter is reporting that Matt Cassel has been traded to the Kansas City Chiefs.

I’m assuming that the trade is a compensation will be a combination of Cassel and Vrabel.  I think this means we will get the third overall pick (Jason Smith, Michael Crabtree, Aaron Curry, Eugene Monroe anybody?).  However, terms of the deal have not yet been disclosed.

Personally, I’m really going to miss Matt Cassel.  Deep in my heart, I really wanted him as quarterback of the future.  He was really fun the progress throughout 2008, and he had been one of my favorites ever since 2005.  I wish him the best of luck on the rest of his NFL career, and hope that one day, after Brady that retires, that maybe he will return.  Until then.

Update: Number 3 pick not involved.  Looks like it will be #34 plus a conditional next year.

Update 2: Looks like it’s just a 2nd round pick, 34th overall.  Wow.  That sucks.  I wouldn’t have given up 34th overall for just Mike Vrabel yet alone Matt Cassel.  Mike Vrabel was the leader of the Pats defense, and Matt Cassel has a very promising future.  Maybe I’ taking it personal since the two of them were my favorite Patriots, but I really just feel like we could have got an extra pick or two and kept Vrabel.

On a positive note, the Patriots now hold the 23rd, 34th, 47th, and 59th picks in the draft.  They also have approximately $20 million or more in cap space.  Dang.

Good work Rizzo and reg…you guys called it!

Man, would have been nice if Matt agreed to like a 7-year deal with us to become the franchise QB after Tom, but you have to understand that he wants to start. Now I just want to know what we got in return.

In my opinion, we really didn’t get enough back. I would have liked some kind of conditional pick in 2010, which was originally reported.

Vrabel and cassel for a 2nd round pick?!?!? Scott Pioli works his Jedi Mind tricks on old boss.

I was hoping to get more as well. But I consider Vrabel a salary cap casualty and I think the market for Cassel was drying up, with Detroit looking like they are sold on Stafford and Minnesota just acquiring Rosenfels, who they have coveted for a couple years now. #34 is more than I thought they would have gotten 2 months ago.

I definitely think some sort of pick would have been in play for next season on top of this 2nd rounder. But time to look at the positives: we have a 1st and three 2nd rounders, cleared some serious cap space and now know that Tom Brady must be ready to play as soon as camp starts. Time to reload our defense, pick up a viable #3 WR and make a run at another title.

Kellen Winslow gets you a 2nd and 5th. Cassel and Vrabel get you a 2nd? This is still a good move for the Pats, but seriously they got short changed. I was unaware that the Patriots had established the KC Chiefs relief fund.

Wow, Michael Smith just reported that McDaniels wanted to trade Cutler for Cassel and the Pats Vikes and Denver were working a trade until Rosenfels got to the Vikes. It would have been Cassel to the Broncos, Cutler to Minnesota, and picks to the Pats. I would imagine if this had gone down, it would have been a couple of 3rd rounders to the Pats?? Who knows.

I find this very, very hard to believe that this is the best deal out there for the Patriots. With most people having Stafford #1 and Sanchez in the top 10, wouldn’t that max out Cassel’s value around the same as Sanchez’s and the worst better than Josh Freeman (who probably could get a Flacco-type situation last year). I don’t know if they were going to just cut Vrabel anyways, and this prevented him from turning on the chiefs and signing for more somewhere else, but you would think Vrabel and Cassel would be worth more than this.

Of course this wasn’t the best deal they could get. The Texans got a 4th round pick for Sage Rosenfells. Sage Rosenfells!!
