Sources: Patriots to Sign John Lynch

Reports are coming in that the Patriots have reached a contract agreement with free agent safety John Lynch.  There are no details yet on the contract, except to say that it looks like he will be in a Patriot uniform in 2008.

Lynch, signed a one-year contract with the Broncos this offseason, before eventually being released.  The nine-time Pro Bowler will be part of a safety rotation that includes starters Rodney Harrison and James Sanders, plus the versatile Brandon Meriweather.  Lynch will presumably play a role in certain sub-packages that have have closer to the line of scrimmage.

Belichick had this to say on Lynch:

“I know there are some reports out there about John Lynch. I can tell you that I met with John yesterday. He came in, we talked, he took a physical, but right now he’s not under contract with the Patriots. So until he is, I wouldn’t have any further comment on that other than what I just said – that he was here. If and when that happens, then we’ll address it. But until then, I really don’t have any other comment on it.”

So nothing is finalized yet, but I’m pretty sure the Patriots will announce the deal later today or tomorrow.

Update: ESPN is reporting Lynch and the Patriots have agreed to terms.
